In chapter 19, Jesus is sentenced by Pilate to be crucified. The Roman soldiers crucified Jesus at Golgotha, which means Skull. Pilate had a notice afficed to the cross which read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The soldiers drew lots to see who got his garments. Jesus' mother stood there watching along with John the disciple, and Jesus entrusted her into John's care. Later, Jesus said, "I am thirsty" and was given a sponge soaked in wine vinegar to drink. With that he said, "It is finished," bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Once the soldiers verified his death, Joseph of Arimethea asked Pilate for Jesus' body. Together with Nicodemus they took spices and strips of linen and prepared his body for burial. Because this was the Jewish day of Preparation, they laid his body in a new tomb in a nearby garden.
