Sunday Sermon Recap: What God Cannot Do, What We Must Do, and What He Has Done

Below is a brief recap of the sermon to help you reflect on and apply what was shared from God's Word.

Summary: The sermon explored James 1:13-18, examining the nature of temptation, the character of God, and our responsibility as believers. Using the outline "He Can't, We Are, He Does, and He Has," the message made clear that God is never the source of temptation or evil, that we bear full responsibility for our sin, and that God in his unchanging goodness provides both the means of escape from temptation and the greatest gift of all -- redemption through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Takeaways:

  • God cannot be tempted by evil and does not tempt anyone. His perfect holiness makes it impossible for him to be the source of our sin. When we are tempted, the responsibility lies entirely with us, and we must resist the urge to shift blame toward God or our circumstances.
  • Every trial carries with it the temptation to sin, and James traces a clear progression from desire to sin to death. The place to resist is at the beginning -- in the mind -- through the renewing of God's Word, prayer, accountability, and fixing our thoughts on Christ before desire takes root.
  • Every good and perfect gift comes from God, beginning with the gift of redemption and the new life we have in Christ. His unchanging character means his faithfulness, grace, and provision are constant. Even in our failures, he ordains that repentance drives us back to the cross, where we are reminded of his atoning sacrifice and the beauty of the gospel.

We encourage you to take time this week to examine your heart as Jonathan Edwards described -- checking the state of your soul, your priorities, and where your love is truly directed. God has provided the escape route from temptation. Our calling is to take it.
