The Day of the Lord: A Call to Repentance

Sermon Recap from Joel 2:1-17

As we continue our journey through the book of Joel, this week's sermon brought us face to face with both the sobering reality of God's judgment and the beautiful hope found in His mercy and grace.

Summary: The sermon explored Joel chapter 2, examining both the historical locust plague that devastated Israel and the prophetic vision of the future Day of the Lord. We saw how Scripture—both Old and New Testament—remains living, active, and vital for our lives today. The passage painted a vivid picture of coming judgment, described with increasing intensity as an unstoppable army approaches, enters the city, and ultimately invades every house. Yet even in the midst of this terrifying vision, God extends an invitation: "Yet even now, return to me with all your heart." This dual message of judgment and mercy reminds us that God's relenting grace ultimately serves to display His glory and sovereignty, while calling us to genuine, heartfelt repentance—not merely outward religious ritual, but a true tearing of our hearts before Him.

Takeaways:

  • All of Scripture is alive and relevant. The Old Testament hasn't lost its importance alongside the New Testament. As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, God's Word is "living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword," penetrating our hearts and judging our thoughts and intentions. Christ Himself frequently quoted the Old Testament, confirming its vital role in our faith.

  • Genuine repentance must come from the heart, not just outward actions. God calls us to "rend your hearts, not your garments"—meaning true conversion isn't about formal rituals or external displays of piety. It requires genuine sorrow, humility, and a complete turning of our whole heart, soul, and mind back to God. This repentance should be a daily practice in our lives as we confess our sins, turn from them, and pursue Christ-likeness through God's power.

  • The Day of the Lord is both terrifying and glorious, depending on our relationship with Christ. For those without Christ, that day will bring inescapable judgment at the great white throne, where all whose names are not found in the Book of Life will face eternal separation from God. But for believers, the Day of the Lord will be a day of joy and life—we will stand at the bema seat of Christ, surrounded by fellow believers. This reality should drive us both to share the gospel urgently with those who don't know Him and to persevere faithfully in our own walk.

As we move through this week, let's remember that repentance is a gift—something we couldn't do on our own until God gave us new hearts. Let's exercise that gift daily, turning from sin and toward our gracious, compassionate God who is slow to anger and abounding in loving-kindness. And let's remember that everything we do should end with the phrase, "and God be glorified."
